Osteoporosis is a greek word, "osteo" means bone and "porosis" means holes. Thus osteoporosis means bones with holes and multiple trabeculance fracture (in spongy bone). Osteoporosis can be compared with wood termites. Generally terminates eat up wood without our notice keeping the outer architecture intact and it is very difficult to restructure. Similar phenomenon occurs with osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is not a disease. It is aging.

There are two types of Osteoporosis.

  • Primary osteoporosis
  • Secondary osteoporosis

Primary osteoporosis is further subdivided into Type I or postmenopausal osteoporosis which is related to the abrupt decline of estrogen levels that occurs in menopausal women. Type II osteoporosis also known as senile or age-related osteoporosis, is due to the progressive decrease of bone mineral density in both men and women that occurs with aging. Primary osteoporosis can occur in both men and women of all ages but often follows menopause in woman and occurs later in men. Patients may also suffer from both subtypes of primary osteoporosis.

Secondary osteoporosis results from any medical condition or medication that contributes to accelerated bone loss. The incidence of secondary osteoporosis is higher in men that in women and is estimated to be 30% to 60%.

TSome of these factors responsible for secondary osteoporosis are:

  • Medication
  • Vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency
  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • Various other disease
